Numerous proverbs and sayings about the sea simply describe the power of the sea, the
dangers of sailing, and the strength of the maritime spirit. One of them says that there is no surrender at sea. You cannot stop, you must sail and
move on. During the corona period, everything stopped, everyone was waiting to see what would happen and in which direction it was reasonable to go.
Several associations for the promotion and preservation of maritime heritage launched activities at that time. Three, of which I know (Tisno, Malinska,
Rab), persevered in that deaf time and started their activities after the immediate danger had passed. All the birth difficulties passed in silence and
emerged as mature organizations.
The Association of Sea Captains of the Island of Rab, with a century-old maritime
tradition, decided to organize a spring rowing and sailing regatta. A spring sailing in the manner of many Mediterranean sea festivals. Brave, as
befits maritime professionals. When I imagine the port of Rab in July or August, I realize that this is a reasonable solution. For an association
of such renown that organizes this event, one would expect a special space. And indeed, one of the most attractive spaces on the island of Rab is
the center of events.

Many participants came the evening before the regatta. It is a joy to see friends and colleagues again and discuss new ideas over good food and a few drinks. Considering good food and culinary topics are current. The next morning, the rowing regatta took place first. While looking through the photos, I noticed something interesting. In another photo, next to the boats, you can see a dolphin's fin. In those days, a story was spreading about a dolphin that was interested in human activities at sea. What this means for laypeople is difficult to understand, but seeing it is certainly an experience.
Sailing is scheduled for two in the afternoon. Due to the good wind, the twelve boats were quite spread out in front of the entrance to the Rab harbor, so that a few seconds before the start, as if by miracle, everyone found themselves in the right place. Typical sailing at all similar regattas. The favorites rush away and are poorly followed because the first group of boats attracts attention. After an hour of sailing, the boats began to enter the finish line and again the greatest attention was on the group that was fighting for a better placement. Several of them entered the finish line within one minute. After the competitive part of the sailing, the crews enjoyed sailing for another hour in a beautiful and very changeable wind. The background of the boats is the view of Rab with the famous large bell tower and three smaller ones.
The overall impression of the entire event is very good. As it was my first time on Rab, I was particularly impressed by the town and Gornja Street with its numerous spaces suitable for staying and socializing. We are entering the new season full of optimism. |

Ten years ago, the main story about the maritime tradition was the restoration of
old ships and barges. Many vessels were saved from being wrecked in the garden or along a wall by the sea. One group of enthusiasts restored
a lot of ships, not to mention wrecking them, and increased their fleet from 2-3 galleys to 12-13. They very quickly realized that sailing and
similar activities increase the number of tourist activities.
So we somehow preserved the boats and ships and, as is the way in the business
world, we came to another problem. People. People are a critical resource. Without them, there are no associations, no old or new ships, no
regattas or exhibition sailings, day or night. Because what is maritime tradition without people. We can create an interactive image of anything
real or unreal, imaginary or fictional, batman and superman.
My intention is to record the activities of these people, because they are a
tradition, and the boat, as well as the sardines, are details from life.
