VRBOSKA 27-28.6.2025.

Someone once said "if we are not at BURTIŽ, it is as if we do not exist". Trying to cover all the regattas and related events little by little, I finally arrived at the 14th Vrboska Lantina, or the Days of St. Peter. As every trip takes place according to certain plans, and is modified by the circumstances, I set off for Vrboska in very hot weather.

I have been meeting the people of Vrboska for years at various large events of maritime culture. At Rota palagružona, Latinsko idro, Burtiž in Šepurina, Days in the Bay, Hvar Metropolis of the Sea, Morbihan... and only now, after almost fifteen years, have I sorted out my things and obligations and here I am at the Days of St. Peter. Several more crews with boats came to the festival of maritime tradition for the first time, so the largest gathering in their history took place.

Vrboska is a place with a long fishing tradition that reached its peak with the beginning of industrial fish processing, especially sardines, so they had a plant for making fish cans very early on. In their small fishing museum, you could see specific machines and tools from the 19th century. Unfortunately, the place known as "Little Venice" is changing its appearance with concrete and square meters into well-known "concrete factories" without any particular specificity and appearance. The epithet "Little Venice" was created because of the numerous bridges over which the inhabitants of one side and the other of the bay communicate constantly. I think there are four or five of them, several hundred meters long. The largest, newly built, is unfinished, or rather I sincerely hope so, because it looks like it is next to the first, unremarkable one.

The changeable weather along the Adriatic gave us a wave of freshness with a fresh bora, so instead of a "sports" regatta, a parade sailing was held. This is certainly better than the heat and calm of the previous days. Sailing towards the exit from the long and narrow bay meant increasingly stronger winds and larger waves, so everyone chose what conditions they would sail in. After an hour and a half of sailing, the ships returned to the port.

From the photographer's perspective, because of the long winding bay, there is a narrow strip in which you can photograph ships sailing with characteristic details of the buildings. There was also no moment of the boats at the start, so group shots are a rare exception. There is no point in regretting something that could not be achieved, but rather looking for an opportunity to return to the still beautiful Vrboska. Congratulations to the organizers, considering that they adapted well to the increased number of participants and guests.
