This maritime biennale, a real maritime festival, was started in 2010 by the maritime community, the people of the sea, whose Association Escale a Sete, with more than 400 active members, was recognized in 2013 as a notable social institution. The association also has its own charter promoting the original maritime heritage as the backbone of the region's tourism and economic development.
Every two years, more than 100 large traditional ships, including the world's largest sailing ships, gather in the port of Sete. Everything takes place in a friendly atmosphere with songs, concerts and good music: more than 40 vocal-instrumental ensembles from many countries perform, appropriate lectures and exhibitions are held, sports competitions are held, and special attention is paid to culinary events. Visitors can enjoy the gastronomic Escale assiette - "docking with a good drink". They will not be disappointed by the spectacle of the Escale Bleue - "Blue Landing".
The festival has already been held five times, every other year. Today, Escale a Sete is an unavoidable meeting place for lovers of the sea, traditional boats, sailing boats and good entertainment. There were 350,000 visitors at the festival held in 2018. It is useful to look at the development of the festival, from the first announcement to a world-class manifestation. More than 300,000 visitors were present at the fourth edition of the festival. Another very important fact is that the French, as the nation with the most maritime festivals, invite Croatian representatives and, despite their modest numbers, often place them on an honorary level. They are fascinated by our maritime tradition. It should be remembered that our most numerous group of traditional vessels (the family boat) is still in continuous original use.
